Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese bodywork therapy that combines centuries old Oriental philosophy with Western physiology, anatomy and manipulation. The Chinese principles of the Five Elements, chi (life force) and yin and yang allow the practitioner to diagnose and tailor each treatment to the individual’s needs, even if the presenting symptoms may appear similar for two different people.

A fundamental belief in the Chinese approach to health is that chi governs our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing; that these are not separate aspects of our being but are instead connected.

When the Chi is blocked or imbalanced this causes symptoms of ill health. Shiatsu, by treating the meridians (channels) through which the Chi flows and their corresponding acupressure points, allows the body to rebalance itself. The meridians and points are accessed with pressure using fingers, palms, elbows or knees or by stretches, joint mobilisations and various massage and fascial techniques. These can be very gentle, vigorous or a combination of both depending on the individual.

Another aspect of Shiatsu is the traditional art of Japanese stomach (hara) massage called ampuku.  Although stomach massage is rarely or never used in Western modalities in Japanese and Chinese physical therapy, it is considered essential as it is regarded as a microcosm of the individual. It is not only used to treat the digestive system but for many stress related issues as well as relieving back pain related to our emotions. Using this range of approaches, makes shiatsu suitable for people of all ages.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A SHIATSU TREATMENT

Shiatsu is given through clothes, so it is best to wear a t-shirt or long sleeved top and comfortable jogging-type trousers.

The treatment usually takes place on the floor on a padded mattress called a futon and the receiver is supported by a body cushion. However, if required, a couch or a chair can be used.

A full consultation will be taken before any treatment to ensure the approach and techniques are appropriate. Depending on the presenting issue the session may include a postural assessment and muscular correction, stretching, meridian and acupressure point rebalancing, ampuku and very gentle fascial releasing which allows the body to unwind its own tension.
