Menopause by Steve Coster
The menopause is a natural process that all women will go through at some point in their life and their experience will be unique to them.
In India women have no symptoms other than menstrual changes. Whereas in Japan and Nigeria women only report having shoulder stiffness; and in Hong Kong women only seem to suffer with joint and muscle problems. In the UK however the most common menopausal symptoms are hot flashes and night sweats.
As an acupuncturist, let me first make clear that when I am helping women going through the menopause, I am not ‘curing’ them, but rather helping them cope with the symptoms of a natural process.
Acupuncture can help with many of the common symptoms of Menopause:
Hot flushes
Night sweats
Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
Difficult sleeping
Low mood or anxiety
Reduced sex drive (libido)
Problems with memory and concentration
Urinary Tract Infection
Frozen Shoulder
Menopause is not a sudden event, but a gradual physiological process throughout a woman’s lifetime. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, menopausal symptoms are generally due to a decline in Kidney essence in its Yin and Yang aspect. But this basic pathology is nearly always complicated by other imbalances – Dampness, Stagnation of Qi or Blood Stasis.
Emotional stress is an extremely important cause of menopausal problems, building up over many years. Worry, anxiety and fear weaken the Kidneys which lead to Yin depletion, especially when these symptoms occur against a background of overwork. With this in mind, Acupuncture can be extremely relaxing.

“I initially consulted Steve regarding treatment for my knee arthritis as acupuncture is one of the few complimentary therapies recommended by Arthritis Research UK. Almost immediately I noticed that my menopause symptoms (brain fog, hot flushes etc) were reducing. After 8 treatments over a period of 4 month, my sleep has improved and my menopause symptoms have gone. My knee is slowly improving and I have been able to make a cautious return to running. Melanie
